Total Grade Points (TGP)
Your TGP (Total Grade Points) is the total of the grade points you've earned across every course you've passed. RankUoG ranks the leaderboard by TGP.
TGP and GPA
Every course you pass earns grade points, based on your grade and how many credits the course carries.
- TGP adds those points up. It grows with every course you pass.
- GPA averages them. It shows how good your grades are, but not how much you've completed.
Both are on SRMS, the UoG student portal, in your Academic Profile. Find your TGP on SRMS walks you through it with screenshots.
Why we rank by TGP
GPA on its own isn't a fair comparison. A first-year with one course at 4.0 has the same GPA as a final-year with a whole degree at 4.0. TGP reflects both your grades and the work behind them.
As a rough guide:
| Stage | Highest TGP, roughly |
|---|---|
| End of Year 1 | ~150 |
| End of Year 4 | ~600 |
If your number is far above these, check it on the portal: it's probably a typo.
Adding your TGP
- New students: enter it next to your GPA when you sign up.
- Already signed up: you'll be asked for it on your next visit, or add it any time from Update GPA / TGP on the leaderboard or in Settings.
Copy it exactly as the portal shows it. It's optional, but until you add it you're listed at the end of the leaderboard without a rank.
How ties are broken
- Higher TGP ranks first.
- Same TGP: the higher GPA ranks first.
- Same TGP and GPA: the more senior student (earlier start year) ranks first.
Students equal on all three share a rank.
Questions
I'm a first-year. Am I at a disadvantage? Across the whole university, yes: TGP grows as you complete courses, so final-years naturally lead. To compare yourself with people at your stage, filter the leaderboard to your year group, or look at the year-group rank on your profile.
Can I still see the ranking by GPA? Yes. Use Rank by GPA above the leaderboard. Views of a single academic year always rank by that year's GPA, because TGP covers your whole degree.
Does my TGP get verified? Yes, with your GPA. Upload a grade document showing your name, student ID, GPA and TGP (see Verification). Changing your TGP afterwards removes the verified check until you verify again.
Who can see my TGP? The same people who can see your GPA. If you leave the leaderboard, neither is shown to others (see Privacy and visibility).
